Script to Install Essential Programs for New Gnu/Linux Users

I wrote a post last night about why you should support free software. To follow up on that, I decided to write a shell script that makes switching to Linux easy. The program installs the following:

  • Netbeans
  • VLC
  • Java
  • Enables DVD playback

The program can be downloaded here. To install and run it, save the program to wherever its easiest for you to find (hint: if you save it in the general folder where “Desktop”, “Documents”, etc. are found it will be the easiest on you.) Right click the program and select “properties.” Select the “permissions” tab, and check the “is executable” box.

Now open the terminal, and change the directory to wherever you saved. If you followed the hint, you don’t need to do this. Next run “./essentials.sh” and it will automatically install!

  1. Normally I don’t read post on blogs, but I wish to say that this write-up very pressured me to try and do it! Your writing taste has been amazed me. Thanks, very great article.
